The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Thursday announced Professor Hassan Askari Rizvi as the caretaker chief minister of Punjab.
ECP Additional Secretary Akhtar Nazir announced the decision in a press conference in Islamabad.
Nazir said the decision to appoint Askari was taken unanimously.
Speaking to the media after the decision was announced, Rizvi said he himself got the news of his selection from TV. “I’m thankful for the confidence in my abilities. I will try to duly fulfil all my responsibilities,” said the newly appointed interim chief executive of Punjab.
Earlier, former Punjab chief minister Shehbaz Sharif had nominated Admiral (retd) Mohammad Zakaullah and Justice (retd) Mohammad Sahir Ali, whereas the then opposition leader in the provincial assembly, Mahmoodur Rasheed, had proposed Prof Hasan Askari and Ayaz Amir for the post.
The four names were the sent to the ECP after the provincial government and the opposition failed to break the deadlock.
Opposition leader Mian Mehmoodur Rasheed on Wednesday remarked that Rizvi was the only ‘neutral’ candidate of the four suggested names.
