Shehbaz Sharif to bring back Begum Kulsoom’s body tonight

LONDON: Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s younger brother and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif will bring back Begum Kulsoom’s body to Lahore tonight for burial at their Jati Umra residence.

Her funeral will be held on Friday and she will be buried at the Sharif family graveyard in Jati Umra.

A flight carrying the body of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s wife, Begum Kulsoom, will depart for Pakistan tonight.

The Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight is scheduled to depart from Heathrow Airport for Lahore at 11pm.

Shehbaz reached London to bring back Begum Kulsoom’s body on Wednesday.

Nawaz’s daughter Asma and two daughters of his son, Hussain Nawaz, along with other family members will bring back the body with Shehbaz.

The former premier’s sons, Hassan and Hussain, will not travel to Pakistan for their mother’s funeral.

Shortly after the demise of Kulsoom, the former chief minister flew to Rawalpindi to meet his elder brother Nawaz in Adiala Jail. The Sharif brothers discussed funeral arrangements in detail and agreed that Hassan and Hussain would not travel to Pakistan.

On Wednesday, the Punjab government had decided to extend the parole of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam and son-in-law Capt (r) Safdar till Sunday to participate in Begum Kulsoom Nawaz’s funeral, as it declared the Sharif family’s residence at Jati Umra in Lahore as a “sub-jail”.

Kulsoom Nawaz, 68, died after months in a coma. She was diagnosed with lymphoma last year, barely a month after Nawaz Sharif was removed from office by the Supreme Court, which ordered him to face trial. Earlier this year, Nawaz Sharif was in the UK with Kulsoom when the court handed him a 10-year jail term and sentenced his heir Maryam to seven years in prison over the purchase of luxury flats in London in the 1990s.

PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday confirmed that he submitted the parole request for the release of Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam as they had refused to do so to attend funeral prayers of Begum Kulsoom Nawaz.

Speaking to the media at the Heathrow Airport, Shehbaz said that his brother and niece were in great pain over the demise of the former first lady.

“May Allah give courage to the bereaved family to bear the loss,” he said.

Shehbaz reached London on Wednesday night to bring back Begum Kulsoom’s body to Lahore for burial at their Jati Umra residence on Friday.
