LONDON: President Mamnoon Hussain said that he can’t provide the desired “relief” to former premier Nawaz Sharif and can only meet him in Adiala jail after retirement.
Talking to reporters in London, the president said that people can object if they want but he will meet Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) lifelong leader Nawaz Sharif for the bond he shares with the former PM.
When asked if he will use his power to provide “relief” to members of Sharif family, he said he can’t do that and can only meet the imprisoned members of the family in jail after retirement.
He repeated his stance over the 2018 general elections and said that the Election Commission of Pakistan should address the reservations of opposition parties and should probe all rigging allegations.
It is pertinent to note here that Mamnoon Hussain’s tenure as President of Pakistan will end on September 9, 2018.
Forme PM Nawaz Sharif was arrested on July 13 along with his daughter, Maryam Nawaz Sharif when the duo returned to the country. The arrest was in compliance with July 6 court order in the Avenfield reference case.
Accountability court had handed Nawaz Sharif 10 years as jail time for owning assets beyond income and 1 year for not cooperating with NAB in the Avenfield properties corruption reference filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).
His daughter Maryam Nawaz was given 7 years for abetment, and her husband Captain (retd) Safdar was given 1 year for non-cooperation with the anti-graft authority.
