SC orders trial court to stop hearing Tayyaba torture case

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered the trial court to stop hearing the Tayyaba torture case.

The main accused in the case Sessions Court judge Raja Khurram Ali could be a colleague of the magistrate hearing the case in the trial court, Chief Justice Saqib Nisar said, adding that the apex court will decide in 15 days if the case will be transferred to the High Court.

In his remarks the Chief Justice said that the most important issue in the case was that of Tayyaba’s custody. Tayyaba is currently residing in an orphanage.

During the proceeding on Wednesday at the Supreme Court activist and lawyer Asma Jehangir said that sections of slavery and women trafficking had not been involved in the case. Responding to a question by the Chief Justice in this regard she said, that the High Court could intervene to include those charges in the challan.

The 10-year-old tortured child maid Tayyaba was recovered from the sessions court judge’s residence in Islamabad early this year. The Supreme Court took suo moto notice of the case, and later transferred the case to the trial court.
